While Chikankari has taken centre stage globally with international stars like Dame Judi Dench wearing beautiful Modern Chikankari Designs, the artisans often remain in the shadows. SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association) Chikan, co-founded by Runa Banerjee, has been instrumental in helping the talented but underprivileged women of Lucknow’s villages by empowering them economically. Inspired by Runa ji’s efforts, Shehri also gives these women a platform where they can make the most of their talent.
In spite of the popularity of Chikankari, many of these talented artisans live in dilapidated houses in the slums of Bharatpuri Lucknow, which houses around 400-500 families. The ladies of the locality are involved in the traditional craft of creating stunning Chikankari Clothing while the men pull rickshaws to earn their daily bread. Striving to survive in cramped quarters with a lack of basic amenities, like clean drinking water and fresh air, these artists craft stories with every stitch, turning Traditional Indian Clothing into desirable legacies on the international stage.
Despite the odds, the talent here knows no bounds. The brand Shehri was conceptualised to provide a better life to the artisans while ensuring quality Chikankari work is available to lovers of the fabric. Thanks to the initiatives taken by us, many female artisans and their families have found means to earn better. With this opportunity, these ladies with extraordinary skills have emerged as a beacon of hope for their families who are struggling with various health issues.
The journey of these women is a testament to the resilience of traditional artists. Through their struggles, they have not only preserved a dying art form but also adapted it to modern times. Thanks to their impeccable work, Chikankari and by extension, Shehri has become a symbol of cultural pride and artistic excellence. Determination and innovation have helped traditional crafts to thrive in the contemporary world. If you love wearing Contemporary Ethnic Wear from Shehri, do remember, with every purchase you are contributing in improving the living conditions of these artisans.
